"East to Eden pt. three: TWEIRAN" A short story by Katlynn Chrans

East to Eden pt. Three: TWEIRAN; By Katlynn Chrans Seven Years Past “How’re you feeling Ara” Uyre asked walking into the small wooden hut, clad in his best battle gear he smiled at me from the mirror. We had both been anticipating this day, he was probably more nervous than I was.    “A little I guess” I replied biting my bottom lip while Roslix gently placed various flowers in my hair    The time had come for me to take my destined role, I had reached my 17 th year and I finally had the knowledge and courage to truly rule the people who had so bravely kept our kind alive for my parents…and for me. I grew to become someone who I believed my parents would be proud of, a strong warrior with a kind heart. Once Uyre had begun teaching me how to rule and understand our people I began to focus more on the trip home. Vinet, the captain of the ship we called Eve, helped me find a way to fuel our ships. It was quite the journey, but eventually, we found a sour...

"East to Eden pt. two: EDEN" A short story by Katlynn Chrans

East to Eden pt. two: EDEN ; By Katlynn Chrans Seven Years on Eden “Ara, come here right now I need to finish braiding your hair” the kind-hearted woman yelled after me. I smiled and darted behind the large berry bush, twigs and leaves finding their way into my semi-braided hair.    My breath left my lips heavily, the slight chill creating a chapped cover. I peered through the gaps as the plump woman bounded out of the cabin, hawking around the camp for me. I created an ‘O’ shaped with my lips and chirped, hoping she would play the game, giving her a small indication of my hiding spot.    “Ara I am serious, you know today is a big day, and Uyre will not be pleased by your behaviour young lady” she called in my direction.    Rolling my eyes I slowly made my way out from behind the bush, pulling the soft red berry off its stem and plopping it in between my teeth.    “Roslix, I was only getting some breakfast, isn’t that the most...

East to Eden ; By Katlynn Chrans             “I can’t do it Erastus, I can’t I’m so tired” screamed Deidre. Sweat glazed across her forehead as she fell backwards her head hitting the soft gold silk cushion.    “Now what happened to the strong, fearless warrior I married” replied Erastus gently moving a piece of his wife’s hair behind her ear and planting a kiss on her temple.             Deidre groaned again pushing with all her might, wrapping her hands around her knees she yelled into the early morning squeezing her eyes shut until she heard the soft cry of a child, her child.    “Deidre, it’s a girl, our daughter” Erastus cried with joy peering at his wife. He stroked the child’s soft cheek, her unique eyes staring up at him.             Deidre lay back once again on the pillow, beckonin...

"A Revolution" A short story by Katlynn Chrans

A Revolution; By Katlynn Chrans    “So how’re you finding freshman year” I smiled at my younger brother as he devoured the eggs mom had made us for breakfast. I watched his lips turn up at the corner, the satisfaction clear on his face.    “It’s great!” he enthusiastically replied, grinning from ear to ear again. “I love that I get to pick my classes, do stuff that I love, not stuff I have to do ya know?” he added.    I smiled back while I stood and ruffled his hair. I set my plate in the sink, my mom rushing over to clean it.    “I’ve got that sweetie, you two get going. Claire good luck with your SAT prep test after school, you’ll do great okay” she beamed.    I hugged her tightly; her hand ran softly up and down my back. Her dark auburn hair smelt faintly of roses and honey.    “I love you so so much Claire, I am so proud of you” she whispered to me giving me a tighter squeeze.    I gave her one ...

"The Dark Days and The Bright Nights: Part Zero" A short story by Katlynn Chrans

Part Zero; By Katlynn Chrans “The results came from the lab yesterday” the doctor said grimacing at the few sheets of paper that will define the entirety of my future.    “And?” I asked nervously clenching my fingers together, I looked everywhere but the sorrow drowned eyes of the man in front of me.    “Hazel, you have a grade five Glioblastoma tumour located on your brain stem.” He said slowly, pity dripping after every word.             I watched a robin land on the edge of a tree branch, putting her faith in herself that it won’t simply break. The words Dr. Jones said barely audible over the buzzing of my thoughts.    “The location, and the type will make it very difficult to remove by surgery, however we can start you on radiation therapy very so-“    “No, I don’t want therapy, but thank you” I interrupted slipping my coat over my shoulders I hop off the examination table...
